Forum Maintenance - Jan 07

Hi All,
I will be performing an upgrade of the forum software soon. I just want to give you a heads up in case you hit the forum and it is down. I will post more information once I have an exact time, but I want this to be up here for a bit first to get the word out.

Hopefully the upgrade will give us some increased performance and a little bit better administration tools.

I know that we are "lucky" enough to be visited by the spammers a lot it seems. Now there isn't much that we can do other then delete the offending posts and ban/delete the users that post that crap. That's just a fact of life, some people just like behaving like idiots and we have to do our best not to let them bring us down.

Also, guest posting, even with that number confirmation, will be turned off. Anyone can read, but to post you will have to register and provide a valid email address.

That said, I will be contacting some others to discuss us getting some additional moderators who can help purge the crap more quickly.

Thats great to hear. The spam usually gets deleted within minutes if not as it gets posted unless they get on while I am asleep, when that happens it is usually deleted by 8:05am after I log on at work.

Without any additional access I can't ban or delete them, only delete the posts.

Scott was running a forum upgrade, it wasn't a glitch. Noone had any access at that time.

Well, it is a good thing that it was done.. We have it set so that an Admin has to activate the account.. That way we do not spend all day trying to clean up posts..

If anyone here would like to drop in at the other web site that I frequent, I would be happy to have you.. :D

I notice that the forum loads incredibly slow now that the update has been performed. I am acceessing it using a DS-3 connection and it appears much slower than before....maybe its my brain.

Loading time seems fine here right now. I will keep trying it on and off over the night and see if its stable or slows down...... We shall see....

Also, looking in my admin panel it seems like the forum is being heavily browsed by Google right now... That might have something to do with it....

Google spyder are probably crawling the pages scouring for email
addresses and link URL's to other sites for search engine placements
for other sites. Thats why we have so many spammers.

Yeah, Ill send you the link to the new admin tool once I have a chance to see what it can do.

For starters I have deleted all the inactive accounts that were clogging up the database.

I think the next step might be to cleanse the accounts that have 0 posts, but have to think about that first.
