I would say the silver stars are campaign stars. Each silver star denotes the 6th award. A person would wear 5 bronze campaign stars and then on the 6th award would wear a Silver Campaign star. Then accumulate 5 more bronze and the 12th award would be another Silver.

Clear as mud? I have no clue why they would send you 3 of the silver.

this medal thing is a sore spot for me, but now that the scab has been picked........ I had to dismount my tank and bandage up the poor bastards we just shot the sh@# out of while the LT stood in the hatch and watched. He got a bronze star. I got a V device for my arcom. the CO got a silver star, must have been for keeping a steady aim with his thermos while his men were under fire! kinda takes the V right out of valor doesnt it?

I am sorry for the previous post. I was venting a little too much. I dont want to take anything away from the medal or those that wear it.

Don't worry about it ... sometimes venting is needed .... and helpful.

I am with you brother. Our unit was one of those based on your rank you got a blanket award. I was recommended for a Bronze Star with a V device. It took a very strong E8 to get me awarded the Bronze Star. This was due to the fact that I was an E5. I recieved my award in March of 92 after a long battle.

I think the award criteria varied from unit to unit. In my battalion if you were a Platoon Leader or Platoon Sergeant or above you pretty much got a Bronze Star. We had an extra 2LT that rode around in the back of a TOW HMMWV and was there just in case we lost a LT that received a BSM. My Platoon Sergeant, a SSG that outranked me by a year time in grade spent the ground war in the Combat Trains with his broken down HMMWV. I led the platoon in his absence. He got a BSM, I got an ARCOM.

Their were some BSM's awarded to Scouts and other people below the rank of E7 Platoon Sgt. Those guys truly earned theirs.

Its not the fact that some got medals they didnt earn, and its not the fact that some that earned medals didnt get them that really chaps my @ss, its the fact that after 20 years...... IT STILL BOTHERS ME!!!!!!!!! I guess the only comfort to me is that when my children or (someday) grandchildren ask about the medals in my shadowbox, I wont have to make up some B.S. story to tell to justify them!

As I recall in my unit, all platoon seargents, platoon leaders, 1st seargent and XO were awarded the Bronze Star. Our CO was awarded the Silver Star. Generally everyone else seemed to get an Arcom.

My unit did not get any medals other than the standard SouthEast Aisa and Liberation of Kuwait medal. My brigade took Safwan and camped out of the airfield while hosting the peace agreement as well. I don't need a medal for that but after hearing some of the stories about who got medals and for what, I feel we should have since we were a lot more involved in the shiot than some of them were.
