by the way congrats to you sgt snyder on your bronze star for valor the V device will (in my eyes) always set you apart from the posers! I salute you brother. Glad someone had the gonads to stand in there and fight for it for you.

I'll have to agree with most here. I know in my unit, 4/34 Armor, the only criteria for the star was E-6 and above while E-5 and below were given ARCOM's and the only ARCOM with V-Device was 'given' to a mechanic who never dismounted his vehicle during the ground war. It could be that your uncle received this award and felt he did nothing more than his job and that is why he never talked about it.

Sgt Jake I need to correct one thing. I do not have a V device on my Bronze Star. I was an E-5, and filled the roll as the field trains NCOIC. My slot in the unit was the commo chief. As all of you know durning combat operations no one in a tank wants the commo guy climbing on there tank. When ammo was low I loaded my hummer with main gun rounds. Then moved up to and reloaded my tankers. This is what a real NCO is. He does what has to be done when it has to be done. My command felt I did more than just my job as the commo chief. Guy's I have always felt the awards by rank were wrong. Just because a PVT is not a SSG does not mean they do not deserve the recongition for a job well done. Once a Soldier always a Soldier!

For those that read this thread... I recall how many people got awards. Our supply E-6 was suppose to get a Bronze Star. He said was retiring and that his guy a E-4 could have it. Yeah ranked played a huge role in awards.

My platoon Sargent said I was the most decorated private he had ever seen. I made E-3 while there and later got an Arcom. I was the youngest guy in my unit. The system made me jaded. In the Balkans I had a Captain that worked for Major General Meigs, tried to entice me with an award, my own Captain laughed. He had no idea what motivated me.
