WOW. You should see if you can get this published as a short story or maybe expand it into a book.

Jake Gyllenhaal is only qualified to act like he knows your story, Scout. He really doesn't know it. Nobody does! Five years ago when me and some of my brothers from Desert Storm got together in Las Vegas, we all had different stories to tell...even though we were all there together. We all remembered different things. It was F***ing fascinating to me! Nobody has any idea what you went through. Just like nobody has any real idea what I went through. I still catch myself trying to recall whether certain things are my own memories or if I dreamed them up. It's really weird. I have been known to have an excellent memory, but certain things seem just too surreal to have really happened to me. Hang in there, Brother! Nobody will ever know your story the way that you do. But nobody deserves to remember it the way you experienced it, either! If you choose to share your experiences with anyone, just keep them true. That's all that really matters...

I agree with you totally, you hit so many things, that I think the same.
How do you talk about it, its not like there is a book to be written. I dont much talk about it, because the feel I have is that no one really gives a damn anyway. We are still in combat today, and I look around at civilians, and you would never even know that we are at war....or in a conflict.
I remember seeing those bumper stickers too, that pissed me off, and Vietnam was the whole entire reason I joined the marines, that and John Wayne. I never considered myself a hero....I just did my job that I signed up for and that be a grunt in the Marine Corps Infantry. Im proud that I was there, no doubt and would do it one hundred times again.
And things change, at least I did, combat, changes you, death changes you, reality of war, things I cant explain. YOu see things differently. Life seemed to be more meaningful, after you come home, and then..time goes by..and do you feel forgotten, yea I do sometimes. But do I say something...what the hell are you supposed to say? I damn sure dont want any pity, etc...just maybe I miss my unit. Hell, I dont even know how to explain me to anyone. I never left that place. Seems one that trains to kill, and prepares to be killed, never leaves you.
People ask stupid questions occationally thru my life, like "did you kill anyone?" What the fuck are you supposed to say....why someone asks that is beyond me.
I like your story, it hit some nerves...things I didnt think anyone else felt....I hate sometimes saying Im a disabled vet, but I have no choice. But I could pick up a pack , and haul a machinegun anyday...and still kick ass.....even 19 years later.

Semper Fi,
Tom
