I got to spend my last week in a trailer with bunks and real showers, that was my first bed and real shower in 6 months what a feeling. It was on a marine camp somewhere in saudi, I remember a USO show, snack bar, small rec center/px and pool I left one of my guys behind as rear det, he called me when I got back to GE they made him a lifeguard at the pool for a month or so what a deal.

I think my x-wife trashed a lot of what I had. I did find these and a few others.

Good times...

Me and "achevyfan" stayed in Kobar to load the ships with vehicles. May-July '91. That was fun.

Wow, those stories bring back some memories. I stayed there for a few days in Jan. 1991 waiting for my Gun to come over on the boat. I remember they told us that if we were caught walking alone that our snipers on the top of those buildings would shoot us, so keep a buddy. I can remember wanting so badly to leave those "targets" and get to the safety of my gun. I can CLEARLY remember the smell of fresh baked cinnimon rolls and one time we had chicken, I was hungry until I turned the 1/2 chicken over and it still had its lungs and guts inside. I lost my apitite. Boy did I long for that chicken in the weeks to follow...

I also stayed there after the war in June doing the "Wash racks." I also remember seing a band there and everyone was throwing chem sticks in the air. It was pretty cool, the band was good.

I remember the wash racks and the band at khobar I got to see was called the "Groove Crickets" or the "Groove Monsters" I think.

Hey, did anyone have a problem with the phone company when you got back? One thing about staying in Kobar towers is they had phones, something I didn't see much durring the war. I called my then-wife from Kobar and talked with her a few times. I got home to a $1500 phone bill!?!? WTF!?!? I only talked for a few 10-15 minute calls. Well the phone company wanted their money and I told them I could send them $100 a month til it was paid off. they said NO! we want our $1500 now! I told them I don't have it. They took me to court and sued me for the $1500. I talked with the court and they asked me how much I could pay, I told the court I could only afford $40 a month. They said ok, and that is what I payed for the next like 5 years. A$$h*le phone companies...

The phone banks I used in the desert were all free calls but when I got to Khobar, I always just called collect to my parents and they accepted. I usually only called once a week or so though. I was but a young pup of 24 then.

Never got to a phone bank, but that Kobar Towers looked like it was more trouble than it was worth. the one night we spent on our way home was enough, it was a mad house.

Twas a great place when compared to the desert. We had running water, A/C in each room, a kitchen (we couldn't use it though) and carpeting...lol. Only thing missing was furniture and the big screen.

The place was crawling with REMF's smelling of old spice and soy burgers. Hated the damn wash rack. Had a Puerto Rican guard unit deciding if it was clean enough and then pack us all into Khobar. However, it was better than the alternative. :)

Rotgut1AD, what unit were you with? I left Germany New Years Eve and arrived in Saudi New Years Day. Only stayed in concrete city for a week or so and then out to the desert.

I remember I finally got out of the damn wash rack. 'Bout 2am. No cots in the apartments so I slept under one one the floor. Somebody ran in screaming "FIRE"!!!!!. I jumped up and ran and was outside before most people got up. Everybody laughing @ me. We later learned some dufuss was BBQ'ing on a deck below us.

I stayed in Khabar Towers a few times when we mwde supply runs south. I remember one night we got in late and I just crashed in my sleeping bag on the floor. In the morning I woke and a few other females had come induring the night. I was an SFC and this young E-2 asked me the next morning if I had a curling iron. I tried not to laugh and asked her what unit she was heading to and it was one of the other POW camps. I told her she would be lucky if she had electricity there and the curly of her hair would be gone 10 minutes after being out in the hot sun. I got back a deer in the headlights look and I thought for a minute she was going to cry. Welcome to the US Army in a war zone little girl!
