I remember going out on a recon mission across the border the night before the ground war began.that really didn"t bother me...it was filling out your toe tag so that it"d be easier to ID you. they needed a squad of engrs. to mark mine fields, or in case they happened into a minefield , to get them out.anyway...we had about 3 hrs. till we left. the CO came by, had a little talk with the squad.he gave us 2 hrs of down time before we left.i remember writing that final letter home...the one your buddy carries to your family....that was the hardest letter i"d ever wrote.

In germany, we had to pack everything from our rooms into a box and tape forms we filled out onto them, that had our personal info and next of kin with delivery address.

How many times did we go to mopp 4 before the war cuz them damn m8 detectors? How many times after cease fire? Hated that damn thing during ground war. Mopp 3 or whatever we were.

Remember the info going around that the gulf war was the end of time because all the armies were converging on Israel?

Remember they said to expect 50% casualties?

Haze, Tricky, y'all remember they fired that 1 million dollar round at a bunker one night? I don't recall if it was 2/69 or 4/41?

Won't go into the whole story, but I was looking for a medical unit that one of my soldiers was evacuated to ... just a couple of days before the ground war started. My driver and I went camp to camp looking for the place ... came upon a small camp that had rows and rows of coffins stacked up ... hundreds ... several long rows, stacked so many high.

Went to the CP to ask about the location of the medical unit and was invited to the mess hall for some chow and coffee. We were talking this and that, and I asked about the coffins ... jokingly asked if they thought they had enough ... they said they were for the 2nd ACR ... they expected heavy casualties.

My driver and I swore that we would not mention it again ... didn't want to add any more uncertainty ... but we ( I can't speak for my driver, so) I carried that with me during the next few days and was always expecting the huge fight that would get us into those coffins. Came close a couple of times, but it never happened.

I embraced anything and everything that offered protections ... MOPP, vacinations, pills, ammo, weaponry, tactics, whatever offered protection.

Isn't that what they expected overall? 50% of all of us that were there would die?

I might be wrong, but I think the 50% was for the entire theatre ... coalitions and all. I never heard much from our leadership about expected casualties for us in particular, but we were expected to be combat ineffective once we met the Tawakana RG, thus the two armored divisions that were to pick up the fight once we found the RG.

All of this is the way I remember it and I could be absolutely wrong on casualty predictions, but aint wrong about seeing those coffins and hearing that they were for 2nd ACR.

Combat units were told to expect 50% casualties. Yup.... half. Our Division commander came out and briefed us and told us...half aint comin' home if they use chemical weapons.

Iraq said that they would use chemical weapons (which of course they did). I know we were told that we probably wouldn't be coming back. Of course our CO (a Major) went insane while we were there so maybe he didn't know what he was talking about.

Did you play a part in your CO's insanity or did he go like Dances with wolves and piss himself, long live the queen and off himself?

The Major's brother (I think he was an Ssgt) was having an affair with his wife. He then decided that he hated enlisted and during Desert Shield he made all the Officers sleep in the same tent but they couldn't sleep in the same place 2 nights in a row. He made us dig fighting position with e-tool, then made us fill them in and move them over about 1 foot. He got pissed when we traded a bunch of TA-50 to some guy with a backhoe to dig the positions for us. He recieved a death threat and decided to run "drills" all day and night for 3 days (with no sleep). Finally he pulled his revolver and threatened to shoot two enlisted men. He was pulled as CO so fast. Our new CO (another Major) was one of the best COs I ever had.

Haze and Tricky will probably remember, we had a mechanic go kookie. He started talking to his tools and sharpening his e-tool. One day he had a verbal altercation with his tools. It was comical until he went off with a pistol on the range we built.

My platoon Sgt. had a breakdown as well. Me and my squad leader were talking with him and he started rambling on about something off the wall and the looked at me and said, "Just shoot me and get it over with.' I unslung my 16 and locked and loaded, when my squad leader put his hand on top of my 16 and said, "It isn't worth the paperwork." I then cleared my 16 and slung it on my shoulder and me and my squad leader went back to our shop. Nothing ever came of it, no charges, no questions, nothing.
