Just out of curiosity I was wondering if you could share what some of your scariest moments where during Desert Shield/Desert Storm?
I know that a lot of people are trained in AIT to do a specific MOS, but what did you really do? I spent seven months in AIT to learn how to repair surveillance radar systems. I was then sent to Germany upon completion of my schooling. I was there for over a year with out ever seeing a radar system. My WO said they were to expensive to repair, so they never used them. When we were deployed to Saudi Arabia I thought I was finally going to get to do what I was trained to do. Well the only thing I did was 12 hr shifts in a bunker with an M60 every day.
We were having problems getting supplies from where ever they were coming from so our Top started our own trans unit for our unit. So I volunteered to drive a truck. Hey, anythings better than a bunker every day. What was supposed to be a few trips for food and water ended up turning into a regular transportation unit for several units. We were not only carrying food and water, we were carrying medical supplies, ammo, fuel and what ever mics. supplies that needed to be some where. This is where one of my scariest moments comes in. We where on a return trip with four escort humvees and 12 trucks of supplies. I was hauling a tanker full of JP4 aviation fuel (there were 3 tankers in the convoy). We had a butter bar (1st Lt) fresh out of West Point showing us the way. We were running across the desert (rarely seen tarmac*), well our fearless leader decided to take a short cut, his short cut ended up being an abandoned road through a mine field. We were a couple miles on the road before the lead driver noticed the mines. We had to set there for a few hours while we waited for some demolition guys got there to sweep us a path to get out. Luckily we only had to go only a little over an mile to get out. I will tell you till this day that was the longest mile I ever had to travel.

* They saved the tarmac for all the reserve units in those pretty Peterbuilts and Kenworths.

The one "scary" memory I have is rolling up over highway 8 right after the "cease fire" was called and I saw 3 Iraqi soldeirs laying front to back in a row on the ground like they had been mowed down. They were all dead and one had a leg chewed up by a track rolling over it.

I saw a lot more but thats the one that sticks out in my mind. Other "scary" moments include rolling through the areas that our armored units had just decimated and having to deal with hit Iraqi tanks going through secondary explosions from main gun ammo inside going off. seeing explosions so big their turrets would fly up into the air.

"T72s to the rear!" It came over the command net from 210th BDE commander. I was covering the displacement of a radar section with my 50 cal and AT4s when I saw "them" approaching through my binos. I wanted to engage but I knew a 50 cal wasn't going to do anything but draw attention to us. I figured we were toast if they saw us. I took the AT4s and my M16 and dismounted to get a shot at them from the side or rear as they passed. Two Mike Squadron M1s showed up but didn't engage. The M1s were less than 100 meters from my position. I remounted and joined our unit.

"Them" turned out to be friendly VTRs and not T72s. If I had fired I would have either killed them or started a shooting battle with friendlies.

It was hard for some units to determine the status of others in that desert, hence all the friendly fire incidents. I am glad you did not find yourself in that predicament up to the point of having to fire upon them, it would have been disastrous...obviously.

Eeney meeney miney moe.

Just past Cobra detention site A haul truck ran off a berm and was in danger of rolling. I was driving a haul unit with one of our dozers that had steel plates welded around the operator to push through berms under fire if needed. Any way, we off loaded and attempted to salvage the other truck. We were unable to do so and gave up around midnight on 24th or 25th Feb. We loaded back up and continued on and shortly there after found ourselves alone and lost and no visibility. I had to shut it down. I could not wear our NVG's because I couldn't see ditches or Wadi's when I ran into one, it would slam the damn things against the dash on my face an nose. So, we stopped. We dismounted thinking the best place to be would be between the tracks of the dozer on the back. During the night, we had all kinds of movement around us. Some non friendlies. Several times we heard them talking. We had all our mags laid out and waited out the night. It was one of my longest nights over there. I learned after the cease fire that the dozer operator that stayed behind with that over turned haul unit captured four POW's that night. The following day we saddled up and moved on in the direction the road took us. Later we came into a large area with 1/18th inf. and a few other engineer elements. Later we had the highway and incoming and a spat with an RGF unit and a night of a car and two jeeps running in toward our perimeter getting whacked. But, that first experience was probably the scariest.

Speaking of bad NVG's. I remember we wnet to practice some night manuever's to get use to them in formation and the company almost running over some mech inf foxholes and bunkers. I can't remember if it was either 6/1 or 6/6 inf. Some of the M1's were right up at the berms. I was our FISTV driver and we started going up an embakement and I stopped. It was the garbage pit. Got stopped just before we did a nose dive. I think it was before they finally gave us PVS-7's.

They were not much help to me that night. It's funny now but when I hit my face on the dash from going in that ditch, I was pissed! LOL

I'll bet you were.

I remember another time, not sure if it was before or after, we stopped in the nick of time before running through an ABI-DABI camp and crushing his chevy pick up.

Not us, but drove by one on the way to the phone tent with a stuck deuce. Backed the track up to him and yanked him out. Went through one marshy area on the charge north and it looked like a giant cemetary. There were dozens and dozens of 2.75" rockets sticking out of the ground, undetonated from the soft soil.

We ended up in some kind of marsh 2nd night into Iraq. Somewhere between objective COBRA and Nasiriyah Iraq. Just cruising through and.. there went the bottom. Somewhere in the same vacinity one of our M1's nose dived off a berm into a pond. Couldn't get close enough to pull it out so had to blow it in place

We saw quite a bit of destruction ... some caused by us, some caused by close air, some caused by fast movers, some caused by 1 ID ... lots of stuff burning and cooking off.

Hey, we (1st ID) did our best to leave a lasting memory in the minds of those who decided not to fight. Those who chose to fight, we left a lasting imprint in the form of some caliber.

OohAhh
