Direct fire

Post by kg4kpg » Sun May 16, 2010 10:48 am

I forget what day I took this, second or third day, but this is an element of Battery B, 2 BN, 18 FA direct firing on T-72 tanks 2000 meters out front. We were moving northeast toward Basrah. ~Chris

I think I have a few good ones but they will have to be scanned. This has always been my favorite.

My last deployment escorting convoys was awesome but will never compare to firing 8" artillery. A note on the above pic, we had a HEMMT for ammo parked along-side to use the crane. It had to be pulled back far to protect the windshield from blast wave, didn't work. We were firing some old white bag powder and the passenger side ended up looking like a spider web after this mission. Several of our M-548's broke down and were left with their crew for maintenance to recover. The ammo section kept the guns in action. Sure miss the guns.

I miss the guns as well. Wish I could have one, I'd do a salute every morning and evening ... nothing like the rush of firing the big guns to keep the heart happy and the blood pumpin'
