I personally felt that Jarhead was a good book that did in fact give a realistic depiction of a young Marine's life during and after the Desert Storm era...however, I felt that the movie SUCKED!!

I too was with AAVs (2nd AA BN) in DS as a Radio technician and think that this movie did not shed a favorable light on the book or the Marine Corps. By the way, I am getting in on this discussion very late, but I just found this forum and this happened to be my first post. [/list]

It was a tank/Mech Inf battle.I also saw the burning hulks and bunkers that lay in the aftermath of an A2 Abrams..when we crossed the mine field you could see the bomblets from the hundreds of MLRS rockets fired laying that softened them up real good..Now the movie that I seen that is as close as you can get to the real thing without Hollywood messing it up and adding things was BLACKHAWKDOWN.

I work with an ex-marine who ragged on the movie nonstop talking about how there was no way a master Gunny would stop a sniper from taking his shot and so on. Keep in mind that this is a Marine who did not get to go over to D/S either and he only drove an AmTrak when he was in. I reminded him that I was there as a 2nd Brigade 1st Infantry Division unit soldier also and that I was lucky enough to sit around waiting on orders I also hoped I would never get too. Sure I look back and wish I had gotten to see some action too. I think this marine was looking for more of a "shoot em up, blow everything in sight up and kill as many as you can" movie.

D/S was primarily an Air Force (bomb the $^!# out of the place) and Tank/Bradley (come in and clean the rest up) war in my opinion. Most of the dead Iraqi tanks, Bmps and so on that we came across were already empty when hit. Most of those guys didn't want to fight in the first place. He changed his tune a little bit after I shared some of the things I saw with him but he is still stuck on this "gunny not allowing the sniper to take his shot" thing.

I will be standing in my local Blockbuster at 10am to rent a copy when it comes out tomorrow.
