Breach, AuthorHouse, Bloomington, Indiana, 2005 - the first novel about combat Marines in Operation Desert Storm
Book Review by Richard S. Lowry
Brooks Tucker has weaved an intricate story around the U.S. Marines' invasion of Kuwait in Operation Desert Storm. Don’t let the fact that it is labeled as a novel fool you. “Breach” is as close as historical fiction comes to the real world. Tucker’s previous experience as a Marine infantry officer brings reality to the pages of his book. This is a story about Marines, written by a Marine.
“Breach” starts in the long days of waiting, leading up to the invasion of Kuwait. Tucker takes the reader through the preparations for war and the waiting under the constant threat of chemical attack. Then he tells the story of the Marines of the 2d Marine Division as they breach the vaunted “Saddam Line” and move into Kuwait. The story continues as the Marines press on toward Kuwait City and defeat the Iraqi Army in Kuwait.
Tucker has added a fictitious set of characters and storyline that personalizes his account of the Marine’s military operations in Operation Desert Storm. The personalities and situations compliment the real history by characterizing Marine life in the 1990s. He writes a compelling story that keeps the reader involved.
His detailed account places the reader smack dab in the middle of a Marine Infantry Platoon as it moves to evict Saddam Hussein from Kuwait. If you want to know what it was like to be a frontline "grunt" in 1991, you must read "Breach."
