New SPAM Prevention

Post by troutster » Thu Feb 24, 2005 12:19 am

Hi All,

I just wanted to update you all on a few changes to the boards. I have added SPAM prevention to the forum code. This is partly in response to the recent spate of mass-posted Clown site links that have been posted by a bot.

This new anti-SPAM addition will require guest/non-registered users to enter a confirmation code as shown in an image that will be displayed when they attempt to post. (Much like you have seen elsewhere on the web). This should put an end to the SPAM posts.

Also, this may get annoying if you do not log in. I have noticed many people here have registered for accounts, but post as guests rather then logging in to their account. If you log in you will not have to enter this confirmation code.

If you have any questions, please ask. Also, if you are having trouble logging in to your account, please let me know.

Yours,
Scott

To give you an idea of the number of spam posts I delete, as of this post, we have had 278 spammers register in the last 7 days alone (since Nov. 7th) and I think I have deleted at least 1-2 posts a day from each of them.

You could start by adding them to your Ban list in the admin panel... If you know their IP you could ban that also...

Scott won't give me that access, I already PM'd him askin gfor extra access so I could clean things up more but he has ever replied.

They are getting bad about using the POLL thread to post as I can't delete their posts there, only change the wording itself. I just locked that post temporarily until they get tired of posting there.

Well, I can understand that people need to be careful with who they let have access to the admin panel...

I would hate to think that this might go the way of other sites and get run over by spammers...

I think it would take maybe 2 days to clean things up.. Problem is, Scott is the only one that has access to the admin panel..

So, Hey Scott, How about you let us help you keep control of the site? It wouldn't take to much..

If you add in a few mods to help out then I am sure that things could be kept cleaned up..

Let us know what you want to do..

I could put a hurting on it if not completely clean up the forums within 30 minutes or so with the right access.

I estimate about 5000 registered users here simply to SPAM or use this forum for linking reasons to improve their search engine rankings.

Scott knows my help on the website as a whole, not just the forums, is offered. I was elsewhere on the website one day and a lady I work with said she liked the colors Scott used when he built it. I'd almost like to add a faint "desert camo" background to the site and start bugging you all for more D/S pics to add to the gallery.

I know that both you and I have offered to help out. Well, between the two of us we could keep it clean with no problem...

No more anonymous/guest posting. Right now visitors will have to sign up and using a valid email, activate their account.

That wont snag the more sophisticated bots necessarily, or the individual that just has too much free time, but should be a step in the right direction.

Next step will be admin approval of signups before anyone can post, but I would rather not do that unless we really have to, I dont want to slow things down too much by making people wait....

Not after I woke up, got to work, logged in, and banned 40+ people for spamming the website then cleared their spam. I woke up too late to jump on this morning before work and clear it.
