Am I the only one?

Post by S.P. » Fri May 13, 2011 9:45 pm

For some reason, after 20 years, I still can not watch a movie about Desert Storm. Don't know if it's because I don't want to see any more of it or I'd criticize it too much. Just curious if any of you have the same problem?

S.P.
I can't watch them because most of them don't portray our stories correct.

I've only recently started watching anything that has anything to do with any combat. I wouldn't watch anything with violence or anything that would irritate me. I wouldn't watch the news or listen to it on the radio. I wouldn't be on this website or look on the internet at anything about any war. But, after 20 years I had to seek help at the VA. One of the big symptoms of PTSD is avoidance. I was avoiding my memories by not exposing myself to any outside stimulus that might trigger them. I wasn't purposely doing it but that's what I was doing.

On another note, I have not heard about any movie about storm that would be fit to watch

how true you are, the few that have been made are just plain, shall we say... stupid, not at all correct, i could go on, an on. to the point that kinda slaps us in the face, by the way that the war is betrayed in these films. but, it also gets me to thinkin about how the ww2 vets feel, when they seen a cheesy film about ww2, not all of them are bad films, but there"s a few.

I've seen a few over the years, Three Kings, Courage Under Fire, and that joke of a movie Jarhead and you're right they do not portray what I went through or heard over the comms from our units in the field while engaging the enemy.

I have seen it a few years ago. And from that time I never watch any other movie.
It didn’t present a true picture of reality.

I tried watching a few "war" movies. I flinched at every gunshot and explosion. The more rounds they fired, the more upset I would get. A combination of extreme rage and sadness at the same time. It's taken me this long to sit through an entire movie and I can only watch them at home with someone else present. Last year I started going to the range. Figured I'd face my demons head on and fire a few rounds. Believe it or not, this is a huge stress reliever for me. Everythings still landing in the X ring too 8O

I was jumpy for years but I can make it through one now, of course I critique the hell out of it

Thunder and Lightning still get me though...and fireworks, and crowds, especially crowds indoors.

no movie can clearly present what really happens in a battlefield.
