what are you doing on the 23rd?

Post by sgt Jake » Fri Feb 11, 2011 10:54 am

Just wondering what everyone is doing on the 23rd at 8pm est for the official 20th anniversary of the ground war. I was thinking of going to one of the memorial parks near hear (about 40 miles) and put a wreath out and just hang out for a while. I am sure there wont be any fanfare anywhere on tv or otherwise. anyone got any better ideas? I know I wont be sleeping, the anxiety is already creeping in on me! ha!
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

Yep some of us been kickin' the anxiety around about the date. Hangin' at a vet memorial is a good idea. I've no idea where one is from here but that's the best idea I've heard so far. I'm gonna try to stay off the booze. It makes me 100 times worse and mix in the date too. I better stay sober a little. Dangerous for me not too. Damn as I hate to admit it but my sorry dysfunctional ass will probably be at the house watchin' for ghosts.

I had to quit the self medicating 3 years ago, so the general public is pretty safe.. haha I just feel like I should do SOMETHING.

last month I was sitting a Legion meeting on the 20th Anniversary of the air war and when the Commander asked if anyone had anything to offer for the good of the order I had to stand up and remind everyone what day it was. funny thing is he was Air Force at that time. I missed my VFW meeting this month but I know they forgot also. I'll be in a Legion Riders meeting this Wednesday and I know I'll have to remind everyone again...and they say Korea is 'The Forgotten War'.

i'm probably gonna go to my local legion hall, order a couple drinks ( i quit my heavy drinking yrs. ago), take one drink over to our pow/mia table that we keep set. light the candle, set the drink down on the table, lite a smoke , set it in the ash tray, and toss my drink back to them that never made it back.......
then i'm planning on going for a long quite walk back in the hills, to just maybe clear my head, and to remember when so long ago.............

Haze my Brother, that is a good idea. our VFW shares their bulding with the Legion and we have Legion Riders meeting that night so I think I just might do the same.

I never joined any groups and like you I have quit my heavy drinking... I always take a drive by myself and shed a few tears. Its hard to say what I want to say because I just can't tell it to anyone who can understand. My friends asked me how it was because I don't know how the media protrayed us in the Desert. Most of them saw images of troops having fun playing sports I guess but that wasn't us (Unit).. Till this day I can't drink anything very cold except beer... Thanks to everyone on this forum its mhelped alot...

J, I know exactly how you feel. it is really hard to find someone who I'm comfortable with sharing my feelings and in the last 20 years I can think of maybe 5 who I can talk to face to face. for me I find it a lot easier to write my feelings. I stumbled across this forum a few daze ago and I see it's been around since '02. I really wished I had found it then. also I found riding my motorcycle to be about the greatest therapy for me so far and being with other Vets makes me feel good. I drink very little now daze but like you I do enjoy a good cold beer. I spend a lot of my time alone at work and that helps when I need to shed a few tears myself. good people in here. I have found so many other people who share the same feelings as I do.

Welcome home my Brother
