Blue Button Initiative

Blue Button Initiative

On August 2, 2010, President Obama announced the “Blue Button” capability that allows Veterans to download their personal health information from their MyHealtheVet account. VA developed the Blue Button in collaboration with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Department of Defense, along with the Markle Foundation's Consumer Engagement Workgroup.

The MyHealtheVet Personal Health Record (PHR) is comprised of self-entered health metrics (blood pressure, weight, heart rate, etc.), emergency contact information, test results, family health history, military health history, and other health related information. The Blue Button extract that Veterans can download is a so-called “ASCII text file”, the easiest and simplest electronic text format (see a sample Blue Button file).

Blue Button PHRs can be printed, or saved on computers and portable storage devices. Having control of this information enables Veterans to share this data with health care providers, caregivers, or people they trust.

On August 29, 2010, VA will make the Blue Button available on our website. Throughout the month of September Veterans can login to their MyHealtheVet account and try out the Blue Button. In early October, VA and CMS will officially roll-out the Blue Button download feature at the Health 2.0 conference in San Francisco.

Additionally, the Markle Foundation has issued a Developer Challenge. VA looks forward to the innovative platforms, apps, and widgets that will result from this exciting competition. For more information, visit the Blue Button Challenge website or the CMS Blue Button website.

i really don"t know if i like the idea of my med records downloaded from the net. i mean, they"ll prob have a few security questions an such. but still.......i know it"ll help those that need a copy, for claims an such. still worries me though......but just about everything does these days.

I went to the VA website and it looks like it is mostly self-reporting, meaning the veteran is responsible for the upkeep of the record so you have greater control over at least a portion of that record. Reminds me of an online site for storage of records.
I could be off but that was my first impression.

I went on to check mine and all I found were lists of medications from 1997 to present. But then again, 'garbage in, garbage out'. The PGW doc I was seeing never typed any notes into the computer, he only scribbled on a piece of paper then probably threw it away. I would like to see the ability to actually read reports from tests etc... Afterall, I am dealing with a diagnosis of PTSD from 2000 that was never revieled to me until I found it by accident this year.

Mixed feelings about this one. Remember they did have that breach a few years ago....

Exactly right sis. You can also refill your meds but there is like 3 other ways to do that. I was hoping to see my medical records. Maybe some day huh? I like the progress though. I don't want to crap on it cuz its new.

Its propaganda ... "See what we're doing" ... nothing but show.

If they really wanted to give us full access to our medical records that should let us have access to all test, reports, dr's notes, restricted stuff, and all. We can't even access all that now, even if you sit in front of the computer with your Doc.

Be leary any time the gov't says, "We're helping".

I like it If it works.I was told eventually you will be able to view all of your test results which would be nice. But like everyone else a little skeptical.

I would like to know how much money this is costing and wether that money would be better spent on the Vets directly with health care issues.

I do think it has potential. If we can access our stuff, if it will let us see results, if it will let us schedule appointments/ tests, if if if if.

You have to go through an 'in-person authentication' at the VA before you can access anything.
