New Here

Post by Heavy D » Sun Aug 15, 2010 8:42 am

I just happened across this site and decided to Join in. I was with the 197th B co. A mechanic in a medical unit. I was wondering if others were having health and mental issues from being in Iraq? You know - closing your eyes and seeing visions from there. Catching a glimps of someone in those dress things they wear - and when you turn to see who no one is there. Was talking to a vet advisor and he thought I had PTSD. Can't prove it without some documentation.

Welcome heavy, 197th bravo company of what battallion? Support BN? Quite a few on here from the old dollar ninety seven. Yes, yes, yes. We all can empathize with you. Read up in here and you will see you are in good company. First thing, go to the VA and get it started. Get help with your documentation. Lots of help available on this site.

Heavy, Redfish is right, there is a lot of info here on how to get as well as finding vets that have the same issues as you. It's a relief to know that you are not the only one experincing these problems.

Also, you no longer require documentation of a specific incident, they VA changed the rules this year. It is a good idea to get help from veterans service officer. They can be from the DAV, VFW, your state veterans affairs office or the VA.

Ask as many questions as you want and we will however we can.

Take care and welcome!

We had To have specific documentation of the stressor incident here in Carolina still. I asked that very question; but, my rep said they require it. The VA specifically said, " being around death or fear of death does not satisfy their requirements". They wanted the date and time, location and the names of those killed or wounded. I had to research my incidents and get "buddy" letters. Haze wrote one for me.

Moral: Be prepared bro. But, if you were in the 197th infantry brigade, some of us on here can help with the dates and locations.

Check out this thread under General Discussion on new PTSD rules. They changed the rules a few months ago.

I saw'em and went into the claim aware of them but they wanted what they wanted. Shame on them but you know how they do. May be a trickle down effect. I'm glad they are changing it. It was tough to go through it again. Very emotional. Plus, it exacerbated my symptoms and I ended up in the hospital. Writing the memories down was significantly unpleasant.

OH! Look: http://www.va.gov/PTSD_QA.pdf

That link is tothe new regs! Effective July 2010. Blessing for all those that follow. You're right lil' sis' . I just missed it by 6 or 7 months.

Link away Redfish, Link away!

I am hoping that my VA has read it as well for my own PTSD claim. I do have documentatioin of 2 events via new reports and reports from KKMC of scud attacks. The others were not documented as so. The other issue that I have is that I was a filler in the unit that I was in and have had no contact with any of my buddies for over 15 years. I am glad they changed it as well.

I had no contact with nuthin or nobody until last year. I did not watch the news, war movies, read articles about war or see any old buddies. Last year while researching for dates and times for my claim I found this site. Sice I've hooked up with two others from my company. Good luck sis'.. Yes I linked it up in here a little

I Google Earthed where our EPW Camp was and you can still see the burms in the middle of nothing outlining our camp.
