Leaving/losing jobs due to temper

Post by latinvet45 » Fri Mar 12, 2010 8:57 am

I was updating my resume in order to find a different job, and i realized that i have left several jobs since serving due to the fact that i can't deal with people. I also can't stand being in large crowds of people. I hope someone here can relate to this since I am a gulf-war veteran, and i didn't use to be like this. I hope to get some people who have or have dealt with similar life situations after the desert shield/storm.....Oh, i forgot to add, that i have been in the va's mental ward hospitalized twice for trying to commit suicide.....it is not good when people around me think i am crazy, i am not crazy i take meds for depression since the gulf.....

Yep, if you review the posts on this site, you will see much information on the subject. The best advice one can offer is to get a service officer to represent you and get to your nearest VA hospital or clinic and ask for help.

You aint alone ... you don't need to be alone ... and I wouldn't recommend that you try to file a claim alone.

FA1SGret,

I need to ask a dumb question.

Is "service officer" someone that is assigned through the VA or are you referring to a rep from the American Legion, VFW, or other organization of that nature?

Not a dumb question at all ... not at all.

There are several organizations that have service officers in them. Yes the American Legion, VFW, DAV, VVA, etc. These, as you probably know, are non profit veteran's organizations.

The Veterans Benefits Administration has service officers also.

I believe most, if not all states, have service officers as part of the state's veterans commission.

The service officers are trained to represent veterans in process of navigating the VA system. Some are better than others ... some care more than others ... some are more knowledgable ... some more committed. I recommend interviewing several before making a choice, because once a representative is chosen and a claim is filed it is cumbersome and redundant to change.

If one is carefully chosen, they are worth the effort ... the VA is too big to fight alone.

This help?

Latinvet,

You are amongst friends. Look back in experiences on this site or PTSD or VA topics. I have has 8 different carreers. Now I work in hospitals and have for the last 12 years or so but, I have worked @ 17 different hospitals.
I have had:
3 wives
work in 5 different states
not lived close to family ( states between us)
a rap sheet to be proud of
4 children from different marriages
17 different hospitals
8 carreer changes
250 college hours with only 2 associate degrees
3 DUI's
5 different VA hospitals
1 in patient stay
homicidal ideations
suicidal ideations
5 golden rings
a partridge in a pear tree

I feel your anguish. Rage is my game and confrontation is my name. I'm still trying to get it together.

I would recommend you to do what Top said. Go to the VA and get help. It's different now and there and no shame in it. I got like 20 things on my fridge reminding me it takes a real warrior to ask for help when he or she needs it. I suffered with it 20 years. So have you and many others on here. It's time for some relief... it's time.

Mrs. 197,

My rep is my county VA rep.

You go to your county administration office and inside is a veterans rep. She filed everything for me. She has been great. Back in the early 90's I did this alone. Big bad mistake.

Top (FA1SGRET) has great info as do many others.

Service officers can be found at the VFW, American Legion, PLAV, DAV, etc. As for the job thing, yeah I am in the same boat. One company made me go to employee assistance because I had trouble with an Arab engineer. He didn't like me because I fought in the Gulf. I was the one that had to go not him. I BS'd my way through that. I don't trust the VA and I can even tell that I have changed since I went to the Gulf. I also hate crowds and at my jobs I felt like I was surrounded by idiots. Just over a year ago I got a job with the US Army. For the first time since I got out of the Army I feel great about where I work and I feel like I fit in. Even though I really don't do much at work, I have to say that I Truely Love My Career.

I would guess not. The Dept of Labor may have a 'VA Rep', but they are probably to assist with reports and vets preferences and such. Much like a VA rep at a college or university, they assist with VA related educational benefit matters, but not disability claims.

Anyone have any other insight?

This is the most helpful encouraging site I have ever found in all my years of searching. Thanks for the info on the Service Officer. I will make that a top priority, so that he is represented.
