Yep, we spent the night of the 22nd inside Iraq ... I stood on my track and watch the air force pound the crap out of an Iraqi armored and infantry strongpoint a few klicks to our right flank ... that would have been the area that the 1ID was going into the next morning ... the units were positioned a 20 - 30 kilometers behind the border berm.

Nineteen years has been a long time. I am still in the military. We don't wear our Class As/Dress Blues very often anymore, but about a month ago we had a formal with senior Division officers and NCOs. You can always tell the Desert Storm vets by the Saudi Arabian and Kuwaiti Liberation medals. It struck me how few of them there were in the room.

I came back from OIF last year. When people ask me how many times I have been to Iraq, I usually say "twice - if you count Desert Storm".

I saw the same type of thing during my time in the military, with the Korean war vets, and then the vietnam vets ... the korean war vets were few and far between from 76 on, but there were still some around. There were a lot of vietnam veterans, but by 96 they were mostly senior officers and ncos.

I wonder what the ratio was for active and reserve in DS ... I think most of the DS forces were reserve, but I'm not real sure about that. I remember my active duty days after DS ... I was a minority in that I had a combat patch.

I remember it well. We gathered up and got our Anthrax shots the night before, loaded the birds, and waited for sunrise. That night was the most peaceful night of rest I got there the entire 8 months I was there. I got there in mid-September and I knew the only way home was through Iraq.

I still get very emotional when I think about or talk about those few days and the 2 weeks or so in Iraq after that. I am proud to have served and would stand the line again. I have not fit in any where else since and have at times longed for the piece given to those who gave all.

My pastor has been working a lot with me and enlightened me today about a school of thought about God. I have at times thought God had forsaken me for what I had done in DS and was responsible for. I felt blamed and guilt. My pastor said that one form of God's love was God in Crisis. His heart broke that day in Iraq as mine and some others on this site did.

I am proud to be a member of this fraternity. I would not change a thing. I do, however, pray that we all get God's piece here on Earth before 19 more years go by.

Welcome home brothers.

Redfish,

My husband is a vet of the Gulf War and is just now seeking help from the VA for physical and emotional illness. I believe he feels much the same as you on his experiences in the region, and I want to thank you for your honesty on this site. Your candor and willingness to share helped me to understand more of what my husband is going through.

I want to address your comment about "not fitting in anywhere".
In most crowds, you won't fit in and frankly, when you look around you, why would you want to? Stand tall and be as proud of yourself as you are of your brothers-in-arms.

Please, Hear me when I tell you and every other veteran who has ever served our country, it is your willingness to stand up and fight for your country and your beliefs that set you apart and make you different from everyone else.

Forgive yourself because God already has!!!

In case anybody is interested. I mentioned the anniversary on a truck forum I belong to. One of the members who is currently in the military and has been to Kuwait recently commented on how it is now a holiday there with a lot of celebration, like an independance day. Certainly makes sense, but it never really crossed my mind that they'd do that, or were that appreciative.
