Ok I was a member of 2nd armored div(fwd). During desert storm we were attached to the 1st infantry division. I know I am qualified to wear both their combat patches. My question is since we were part of 7th corps would I have been authorized to also wear the patches of the 1st and 3rd armored divisions along with the 2nd acr?

Ok, here is my understanding:

I had a similar situation. I was with the 197th Inf. attached to the 24th Inf. division in the 18th Airborne Corps.

When we returned from storm, we were given the choice but we all had to wear the same patch. We could wear the 197th patch, 24th Inf. patch or 18th airborne. We chose the 197th.

I think you can wear the 2nd AD, the big red one or 7th corps but that is it.

I have been trying to find out the same thing. We were in the 2nd COSCOM (which was part of VII Corps) and nobody can tell me if I am authorized to wear the VII Corps patch. The 2nd COSCOM was deactivated shortly after we redeployed back to Germany and we became the 3rd COSCOM.

My understanding, AR 670-1, is that you wear the patch of the unit that you are assigned or attached to. 2nd coscom had a shoulder sleeve insignia yes?

If so you would wear the 2nd coscom patch. I don't believe you would wear the VII corps patch because you were 'assigned, or attached' to VII corps. You were a part of VII corps and belonged to VII corps, but you were assigned for UCMJ, supply, and administration to 2nd Coscom.

Now for the 197th attached to the 24th, you could were either, but not the 18th corp.

I was in an arty battalion of 210th bde. 210th bde was attached to 2nd ACR. I can therefore wear 210th bde or 2nd ACR.

It gets confusing, but basically you wear the patch of the unit assigned, or the patch of the unit of attachment.

The army changed all this in 205 or so ... so it is hard to find the older 670-1 to be certain.

Thank you for the clarification.

It was always a confusing subject, and with the reg changes, it's more difficult to determine what used to be correct. I believe the changes are not retroactive, so folks that served in combat before and after the changes can adhere to either.

I wish I had an old copy of AR 670-1 ... then I could be absolutely certain.

That sounds right. We picked the 197th patch because it was a lot cooler than the 24 id "strawberry" patch. 18th airborne was the blue dragon so we probably woulda picked it if offered.

Our Brigade commander issued an order that no one in the 210th Bde could wear the 2nd ACR patch, but a lot of us did anyway. I wear the 2nd ACR patch instead of the 210th Bde. My choice.

I was attached to the 13S&S Battalion, and we were deployed with 7th CORPS in Desert Shield/Storm. This last deployment I went with 7th STB and was attached to the 101st, chocking chickes....lol. I wear my 13th S&S patch cause it was my first, and also because its no longer an active patch. There are a few here on Ft. Eustis that have it. All of us are old foggies.

we were given the option to wear either 8th ID or 3rd AR. I was assigned to 1/68 AR 8th ID in Wildflecken, attached to 4/34 AR 8th ID in Mainz and 4/34 was attached to 1st Brigade 3rd AD. funny thing was 4/34 took 2/32's place while they stayed at The Rock.

redfish, i'm thinking that your right, if i'm remembering correct. the whole unit had to decide on the patch to wear. nobody really liked the strawberry patch, the 197th. looked better, plus she was deactivated that summer, and our unit patch was changed to the 24th. anyways, when we became the 3rd. bde of the 24th.
redfish, they reactived the 197th. as a training bde, at benning a few yrs. back. also the 72nd, but not at benning, can't remember where, but they got a facebook page, i think.

Interesting. I knew they reactivated the dollar ninety seven. I see it on the discovery channel at sniper school.
