Liberation of Kuwait

Post by pahunter » Fri Aug 07, 2009 10:28 am

I was discharged in Dec of '91. I noticed that they started giving medals in '95 for those who served during Op Desert Shield/Storm. It is called the Kuwait Lib of Kuwait.it is awarded to those "who participated in or supported in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. I was just wondering how you can get this award added to my DD214 or get approval to wear this ribbon.

You can either fill out an SF 180 to have your records updated or you can apply to have your ribbons/medals replaced and they will do it then. You will get a DD-215 and you just keep it with your DD-214. When you submit the SF-180 you may want to see if you are eligible for the third star on your SWASM. When I submitted mine (I submitted an SF 180 to change my DD-214 to include what I was missing) they granted the third star, added my two missing AAMs, added my second overseas ribbon, Kuwait Liberation (SA), Meritorious Unit Citation ribbon and the Kuwait Liberation (K) medal.

Thank you for the info. I was able to fill out the SF 180 online at military.com/ , now I just have to send in a signature verification page. Thank you again. :D

You are welcome. If I can be of any other assistance please let me know. Just an FYI, it took 9 plus months before I heard anything from the US Army board after the initial "We recieved your request" letter.

I took quite a while to get mine back as well, but they did get me squared away.

I finally got a response back from the Personal records center and it was quite interesting. They don't have listed half of the ribbons that I have listed on my dd214 and they didn't give me any of the "Arabia Lib of Kuwait", or "Lib of Kuwait" ribbons. I guess I will have to call them.

The Kuwait Liberation Medal was approved by the Kuwait Council of Ministers for award in five classes, generally according to the rank of the recipient. The medal was offered by the Chief of Staff of the Kuwait Armed Forces on July 16, 1994.

In case you don't have the criteria for the medals, here they are:

KLM -Criteria: Awarded to members of the Armed Forces of the United States who served in support of Operation Desert Shield or Desert Storm in one or more of the following areas between 2 August 1990 and 31 August 1993: Arabian Gulf, Red Sea, Gulf of Oman, Gulf of Aden, that portion of the Arabian Sea that lies north of 10 degrees North latitude and west of 68 degrees East longitude, as well as the total land areas of Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. To be eligible, a service member must have been:

a. attached to or regularly serving for one or more days with an organization participating in ground/shore (military) operations;

b. attached to or regularly serving for one or more days aboard a naval vessel directly supporting military operations;

c. actually participating as a crew member in one or more aerial flights directly supporting military operations in the areas designated above;

d. serving on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days. These time limitations may be waived for members participating in actual combat operations.

KLM (SA) Criteria: a. Members of the Armed Forces of the United States must have served in support of Operation Desert Storm between 17 January 1991 and 28 February 1991 in one of the following areas: Persian Gulf; Red Sea; Gulf of Oman; that portion of the Arabian Sea that lies north of 10 degrees North latitude and west of 68 degrees East longitude; the Gulf of Aden; or the total land areas of Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

b. To be eligible, a Service member must have been:

(1) attached to or regularly serving for one or more days with an organization participating in ground/shore operations;

(2) attached to or regularly serving for one or more days aboard a naval vessel directly supporting military operations.

(3) actually participating as a crew member in one or more aerial flights supporting military operations in the areas designated above; or

(4) serving on temporary duty for 30 consecutive days during this period. This time limitation may be waived for people participating in actual combat operations.

Hope this helps with your pursuit.

i sent in the sf180 thing a couple months ago... this guy from the nprc called me asking just what did i want. so i explained to him that i"d gotten out before the army authorized the LOK medal from kuwait. i wanted it, and by dd214 updated. this guy told me that since i already had the other two that the third was automatic, an that the medal from kuwait would"nt be on my dd214 anyway, since they don"t put foreign medals on the dd214. news to me....
anyway, he told me that i should just go out an buy one, if i wanted it. kinda pissed me off a little, course it don"t take much to piss me off.

What you want is:

Award of the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait) and a DD215 issued to reflect this new award.

You will have to forward to them a copy of your orders stating that you were assigned or attached to a unit that met the previously posted requirements.
this guy told me that since i already had the other two that the third was automatic, an that the medal from kuwait would"nt be on my dd214 anyway, since they don"t put foreign medals on the dd214
The other two? What other two?

This is true about foreign awards on the DD214 ... as in the awards have to be approved by the U.S. before they can be awarded, and then they are approved and awarded by the U.S.

This can get really deep really quick ... and confusing ... hope I didn't add to the confusion.

I requested my stuff a number of years ago. They told me there had been a fire in St. Loius warehouse that held all of our records from that time period. That sent me over the edge years ago. Unbelievable.
