a lot of people don't even know what the VFW does..They just think it's a bunch of VETs sitting around wanting people to feel sorry for them ..well they are wrong.... We do a lot of community type services... We are cooking for the Stewpot tomorrow who feed the old folks and delivers meals to the one's who can't get out.. We had a program where we put a flag in every classroom in our school system here. and the list goes on and on... A bunch of vet's caring about vet's and their community....

I hate like hell to say it but I have catered at a couple of the local VFW's here and the impression I got from what I could see was a bunh of vets just sitting sround drinking and smoking the place up. 1 of them was a tiny little place too, not much more that could be done than drink and smoke.

I am not involved in any of the VFW's yet and am not sure if and when I will be able to. If you saw the place I was talking aobut you'd understand my not wanting to get involved.

Well we don't have a bar and nobody sits around here smoking..and no smoking in the building... If we have a party then it is a special event then there will be some drinking but you have to supply your own but that is the only time it goes on... A lot of Vet's ask where is the VFW cause they want to drink but they get disapionted when they find out we don't have a bar....guess that is one good side of our Post being in a small town... All post are not like you experinced.. so please don't take it the wrong way...

I know what you mean. A few weeks after I was discharged I was approached by a few men and they were recruiting new members to join the VFW. I invited them in and they proceeded to tell all the stuff they were involved in and what they did in the community. It sounded interesting so I gave it a shot and joined. I was a member at that Post for about three years (active for about a year and a half) and the only thing we did was march in two parades a year, Memorial Day and Veterans Day. That was it, at the meetings all they did was drink and play cards. So I no longer participated and haven't joined another Post since.

For the most part I am happy with the VFW. I went through the chairs at the Post and now I am Jr. Vice of the District. Most Posts are old and they are tired of doing things and they just want the younger guys to do everything so that they can do what they do best (bitch). Look for another Post and see what they do. I am in a big city so there are many for me to choose from. If you have any questions please ask.

When I was with the first POST I mentioned above it is located in a town of about 3000 residents. I now live in Central Pa, in a town that is about half that size again, roughly about 1200 people. So I don't have the option to find another post, at least not one that is a reasonable distance away
