Rafha Refugee Camp

I'm looking for anyone from the 527th Engineer Battalion of the Louisiana NG. This unit, along with Alpha Co., Delta Co. and a handful of HHC personnel from the 1-41 INF (2AD fwd) built and secured a refugee camp just north of Rafha City, Saudi Arabia. After the cease fire a very small force (1-41 I...

Feels like it happened yesterday. SFC Gentry, if you still check in on this site, do you know how to get a hold of SPC Khiem Ta?

My Box Called "War Stuff"

I want to share a tool that I have learned through many years of counseling at my local VetCenter, which is is free and NOT directly connected to the VA. I know that holding down a job is difficult for a lot of people, especially for us Combat Veterans. By the front door of our home I keep an imagin...

Re: Sarin Gas Exposure

The Gulf War Registry is quick and easy. Just do it. It is scary at first, but getting registered is a good step in the right direction, even if you don't like the VA and having to deal with them.

Re: What was the scariest thing you did or seen in the war?

Thanks man. It's a very tough 19 years. Right now I am caught between sharing my experiences and not wanting to sound like I'm bragging or whatever. So many times over the years I would meet someone and the conversation quite often circled back to the military. They'd invariably ask if I deployed an...

Re: What was the scariest thing you did or seen in the war?

The incident you're talking about wasn't from our unit, but I think I read something about that one. I have an uncle who was a Marine in Vietnam. He was there only 5 months or so, until he got wounded and sent to Okinawa to recover. He's a big help for me in my recovery from the war. But he stressed...

Re: What was the scariest thing you did or seen in the war?

I have to admit that I was very, very scared even before we deployed, and am not afraid to say it. 2AD was one of the last combat units tabbed to deploy (around Jan. 7th) as they needed something to attach to 1st ID. [EDIT: I'm going to file this under 'Too Much Information'] I have a tendency to sp...

Re: What was the scariest thing you did or seen in the war?

Yeah, watching T-whatever rounds bounce off was kind of wild. I saw a T-72 fire three rounds at an Abrams. They made huge explosions, but when the smoke cleared the Abrams was sitting there a little dented and fired one round into that T-72. The turret popped right off and straight into the sky. It ...

Re: Basrah Highway.

Thanks Dagger. The Nasiriyah photo is possible. Definitely not Safwan. My memory seems to recall a portion that curved up into the air and went over another portion of the highway. Like an overpass. It does look familiar. After the cease fire our unit kept going north and made it all the way up nea...

Re: What was the scariest thing you did or seen in the war?

There were some scary times.

[EDIT: I'm going to file this under 'Too Much Information'] I have a tendency to spill my guts and then get shy about it.

But just when I was getting over my fear and getting used to all the killing and destruction, the damn war was over.

Re: Near Fratricide

I remember at some point we were in a bit of a long wide wadi. I may have been just a low area. We came to a stop. I do not recall why. We were in an area where a previous battle had occurred. There were some dead Iraqi's around. Some how we became aware of a pocket of RGF just over the horizon. A ...

Re: Writing a novel about a Desert Storm Veteran

I'm with redish on this one. Who the fuck is this Jack David guy to demand information from us? i was a Combat Medic in the infantry and we took a bunch of casualties, but not once did we evacuate by chopper. Then again, I was a platoon line medic on a Bradley and our evac were the company M113 ambu...
