Re: D co 3/327 101st Airborne 1987 to 1992

I was in 3rd Platoon under SSG Barnes & LT Karnstedt. My buddy, SSG Leegard was in 5th. He went the full 20 years & retired a SFC. I also remember a SGT Lazenby being in 5th Plt as well as a SGT Tacconelli who was then put in 3rd PLT as a Sqd Ldr under me. I was a SSG/Section Leader the 2 years I wa...

Re: D co 3/327 101st Airborne 1987 to 1992

I was in D Co. from July of 1990 to July of 1992. I was in 3rd Platoon during Desert Shield/Storm & then 4th Platoon after we got back to the states. What Platoon were you in?

Re: How I Know I'm a Relic....

Took a stress test today. Turns out my heart is strong. My FAT ASS is the problem! Gotta' get back in shape! I was 175 lbs when I got back from Desert Storm and 200 lbs when I ETS'd from AD in 1992. I'm now 250 lbs. I'm a SLUG.....

How 'bout some Desert Shield Trivia....?

I wasn't over in Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield until mid-September of 1990 and I'm not sure when AFN went "live" but I heard this as a Jeopardy question one night & found it interesting;

What was the 1st song AFN played when they began broadcasting during Desert Shield :?:

Re: Desert Storm Bar and Grille

I hear you Redfish! I went through all kinds of sleep studies for sleep apnea, spent close to $1000 on co-pays for the tests and the CPAP machine so I can finally get some "quality" sleep. Now I don't use the machine because the better I sleep the worse & more vivid the nighmares are. Truly cannot w...

Re: Seperation pay

Did you get out of the Army under the SSB or VSB program? I did, I got $24k after taxes. If I remember correctly any future moneys paid out such as retirement from the USAR or NG or VA Disability would be used to 1st pay back the money you received. Once you're at a zero balance you would then start...

How I Know I'm a Relic....

My MOS has been eliminated; I was an 11H, Anti-Tank Infantry. The 1st Division I was in, 8th ID has been deactivated. My 1st Stateside post, Fort Ord, CA is closed. My 3rd assignment, Camp Greaves, South Korea was vacated by U.S. Forces. My 4th assignment, a Recruiter at the 100 Oaks Mall in Nashvil...

Re: 20 Years Ago Today!

I've been in the VA system for almost 12 years but never took the time to start a claim because of all the perceived hassle. At times it seemed like reliving the moments and trying to convince someone I have issues was worse than just ignoring things. Then the possibility of being turned down becaus...

Re: 20 Years Ago Today!

I lost another damn job in January. Took 2 hours off to go the the VA because my meds ran out. They were my anti-anxiety meds and I went a week without them and was pretty wound up because of it. Got the meds but going without them for a week caused me to have chest pains and shortness of breath. I ...

Re: What you are taking to Iraq this time

It's a whole different ballgame over there now. Barracks (well, trailers..), Mess Halls, SHOWERS!! Email, Laptops with webcams, GPS small enough to fit in your hand as opposed to the huge thing the LT carried (and were damned glad we had!!), Cell phones, text messaging.... Nothing like we had where ...

Re: 20 Years Ago Today!

I had gotten over there in mid-September so when the Air War started I was already in-country for 4 months. We were up on the Kuwait border along Tapline Road for our 2nd training trip in the desert. Once the Air phase began we were pulled back to Camp Eagle II to get our combat load of ammo & equip...

Re: In Some Real Trouble Involving Bronze Star

I think the award criteria varied from unit to unit. In my battalion if you were a Platoon Leader or Platoon Sergeant or above you pretty much got a Bronze Star. We had an extra 2LT that rode around in the back of a TOW HMMWV and was there just in case we lost a LT that received a BSM. My Platoon Se...

Re: 20 Years Ago Today!

Well, I did Google it and found a few mentions of the anniversary. They say it actually started at 2330 hrs GMT on the 16th. I guess my memory is off by a day. Of course since I was sitting out in the desert with no exposure to media of any kind I wasn't really sure what day it was most of the time ...

20 Years Ago Today!

Today marks the 20th anniversary of "Our" War. So far I haven't heard a single mention of it anywhere in the news. We are truly the 2nd "Forgotten War". There were over 400,000 over there! How can we forget that?!?
